Biblical Womanhood

Hello everyone. My topic today is not one that is easily intreated and you will more than likely scoff at me (and I even expect this). The Lord has taught me so much about my "role" as a woman. I had my plans, and then God exacted his plan in me...Let me tell you that they were two completely different views. I have been a homemaker, keeper of the home, housewife, or whatever society calls "us" today, for six years. Before this, I worked from the time I was in college (another blog, another day) until my third child, which is 9 years. So I have done both. I have lived my life according to society and and I have lived my life according to the Bible. The later approach has been spiritually rewarding while the prior approach was physically/monetarily rewarding. I can bodly say that I am doing what I have been called to do and I am so happy in this place.

I have an excerpt from a book entitled, "RECOVERING BIBLICAL MANHOOD AND WOMANHOOD A Response to Evangelical Feminism" Edited by John Piper and Wayne Grudem

HOLD ON you are in for a bumpy ride!

Too many women rush headlong into a career outside the home, determined to waste no time or effort on housework or baby-sitting but rather seeking to achieve position and means by directing all talents and energies toward non-home professional pursuits. It is true that many “perfect jobs” may come and go during the childrearing years, but only one will absolutely never come along again—the job of rearing your own children and allowing them the increasingly rare opportunity to grow up at home.
Golda Meir, by her own testimony, devoted her adult life to the birth and rearing of Israel at the cost of her marriage. She separated from her reticent husband in pursuit of public life. To quote Mrs. Meir, “what I was made it impossible for him to have the sort of wife he wanted and needed. . . . I had to decide which came first: my duty to my husband, my home and my child or the kind of life I myself really wanted. Not for the first time—and certainly not for the last—I realized that in a conflict between my duty and my innermost desires, it was my duty that had the prior claim.”30
How sad it is for a woman to try to build her life on the notion that she is going to pursue whatever momentarily happens to gratify her needs socially, emotionally, physically, or professionally. Though the duty of wifehood and motherhood may lay claim, the desires of personal ambition and success in public service can take hold, of which the Lord warned, but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire [epithumia,Greek], he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin [hamartia, Greek, literally “missing the mark”]; and sin, when it is full grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:14-15)

When a wife goes to work outside the home, often her husband and children go through culture shock. Suddenly the husband has added to his vocational work increased family assignments. He is frustrated over the increase in his own assignments and guilty over his wife’s increased fatigue and extended hours to keep up at home. God did give the husband the responsibility of providing for the family (Genesis 2:15). To sabotage his meeting that responsibility is often a debilitating blow to the man personally and to the marriage. A woman’s career can easily serve as a surrogate husband, as during employment hours she is ruled by her employer’s preferences. Because the wife loses much of her flexibility with the receipt of a paycheck, a husband must bend and adapt his schedule for emergencies with the children, visits to the home by repairmen, etc. This leaves two employers without totally committed employees and children without a primary caretaker utterly devoted to their personal needs and nurturing. Note the prophet’s warning, “Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path” (Isaiah 3:12).
Many women still see the paycheck as an inadequate trade for the sights and sounds and tastes of home. Though some see their paychecks as representing independence and achievement, to be bound to paychecks requires in exchange the time formerly allotted to work for the family in private, personal ways. This is not to say that there are never times when a woman should seek employment outside her home. Nevertheless, are we coming to a day when a woman’s employment outside the home is the rule rather than the exception, leaving no one to give primary attention to the home and to producing the next generation.

WOW! I told you that it was going to be bumpy! So what do we do, women? We are taught to go out and do, do, do....but the Bible teaches us something very different. Well, when I worked, we had more money coming in, but we additionally added more bills, because more is better! right? NO IT IS NOT. What God calls you to do is better. We do not have as much money coming in today, but we have what we need...we have never lost our home or went hungry, and I have always had the peace of God deep down inside through all of these storms. My husband is the provider for our family not me...I am glad. My responsibility and my JOY is at home raising our children. I can even homeschool them, thanks to our freedom in America...Women, we are free to do as we please. Right? I don't have to answer that one! Only you can!

In the above excerpt, I put in bold this statement: but only one will absolutely never come along again—the job of rearing your own children and allowing them the increasingly rare opportunity to grow up at home. The perfect job of rearing your own children and allowing them to grow up at home will never come along again when they are grown. Thank you God, for allowing me this extreme priviledge...Thank you so much God!

Now we need an ending, right? Here it is:

Homemaking, if pursued with energy, imagination, and skills, has as much challenge and opportunity, success and failure, growth and expansion, perks and incentives as any corporation, plus something no other position offers—working for people you love most and want to please the most!
In the words of Scripture, I have found a worthy challenge:
Teach them [God’s words] to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. . . so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are above the
earth. (Deuteronomy 11:19, 21)

Homemaking—being a full-time wife and mother—is not a destructive drought of
usefulness but an overflowing oasis of opportunity; it is not a dreary cell to contain one’s talents and skills but a brilliant catalyst to channel creativity and energies into meaningful work; it is not a rope for binding one’s productivity in the marketplace, but reins for guiding one’s posterity in the home; it is not oppressive restraint of intellectual prowess for the community, but a release of wise instruction to your own household; it is not the bitter assignment of inferiority to your person, but the bright assurance of the ingenuity of
God’s plan for complementarity of the sexes, especially as worked out in God’s plan for marriage; it is neither limitation of gifts available nor stinginess in distributing the benefits of those gifts, but rather the multiplication of a mother’s legacy to the generations to come and the generous bestowal of all God meant a mother to give to those He entrusted to her care.

What do we want to leave behind for our children? I know what I am leaving behind for my children. I am talking with them, praying with them and learning from them...There is so much here..that it truly is an Oasis. It is like the Spirit in us that never runs dry and overflows.

I pray this little note helps you. I know it has helped me. Love you all, Leah

The worst ice storm in Kentucky history...and it visited us in 2009!

With a thankful heart, I am writing today. I am humbled and grateful for the invention of electricity. It is the most efficient way to live in this modern time.

I wrote one time that I would like to live in the settlement days of long ago. I still wish for those days of living simply....simple, simple. In a world where you knew everyone, loved everyone, prayed for everyone. Where a town would not only come together from time to time, but stayed together. A time, when everyone was a village and a unit.

We, as you can guess, have been without power for a week. We survived by the propane gas stove that we cook on. We all stayed in the den and and kitchen area of the house. Mom and Dad purchased a generator for us. We believed we would be without power for three weeks. A crew from Alabama came in to help in our area and they are amazing! They came at 6:00 p.m. Monday night and in less than an hour our power was restored.

I want to say, when an emergency, even a crisis occurs, a community really pulls together. This has happened here in Fordsville. All of our neighboors have helped us, checked on us, visited, and gave great support to us, and we tried to do the same for them. John and Bro. Renfrow had to go to Morgantown and then Beaver Dam to get gas (there were no deliveries or electricity to pump it in Fordsville). Sheila and B.J. came and checked on us. Bro. Renfrow, Mr. Bratcher, John and others cleared the roads. That was not easy.

We had to get up as soon as daylight came. We had to get breakfast started. Then while we were eating breakfast, we had to boil water to clean the dishes. The boys took turns cleaning dishes, while the other cleared the table. Abigail pushed the chairs under the table and placed the seat cushions back in place. They are all such troopers. They know how to survive! We had a little break so then we moved all the bedding around and had a school session. Then we had to prepare lunch and get the water boiling again. We then cleared the table and washed the dishes...We had to then prepare supper at 3:30 and then eat at 4:30 and get all the dishes up again before dark. Night came to Fordsville at 4:45 or 5:30 p.m. We sat around candle light and cozied in all the blankets. The kids were boisterous and crazed...for we were confined to a small area. One night I just let them yelp and play and I just put the covers over my head! John did not sleep for he kept a vigil over us to make sure everyone was o.k. He would open the basement door to make sure there was adequate ventilation. The propane heat was very warm and inviting, but he didn't listen to it's lull. He knew the silent taunts of it orange-blue flames were foreboding so he kept a watch over us all.

We lived very simply and primitive this week. I have done things this week that I will carry with me while traveling through this walk of life. I am not as apt to complain or talk so big. I can be reduced to nothing over night, and calamity is out there to greet us all. I am not unwise from this week and I am grateful for this experience and thankful for God's watch, care and protection over us as the sun comes up once again in our quiet modest town of Fordsville.

Homeschool is back in session and Caleb is 4! (I even multitask in a blog!)

Well, we have been off from school from Novemember to December. I have been down with a very bad bought of TMJ (joint of my jaw doesn't work and I have intense muscle spasms that cause me to not be able to eat, talk, or sing---MY FAVORITE THINGS!)

We started back schooling January 5th. They are doing great. John is off of work for a while so he is teaching math and spelling. I am teaching language, science, and history. I am also teaching Abigail (Kindergarten) how to read...very fun. She loves "Green Eggs and Ham" so we read that religiously! Caleb (just turned four January 10th!) just listens in from time to time. He loves to play by himself, he can do that for hours. Mamaw and Papaw bought him a v-tech computer so he is able to participate in school with his "computer.

I have always taught the children about the Lord. Since I have been so sick, since October, I haven't been able to talk and I have not been able to talk to them about the Lord....I went in a depression. I was trapped in my body. It has been a long valley, for me, and I am glad to the Lord that I am coming out of it. I always pray with the children and we learn about the Lord. WE are getting back to it, but it is a slow process. I am taking it, truly, one day at a time...that is not just a clever phrase..it is a way of life for me right now.

Caleb had his birthday and here are a few pics.... He loves cakes. He can eat a whole cake alone! He got a guitar and a bouncing tigger from his Mamaw Erma. He got a little tikes car racing set from CoCo. He got a vtech computer from Mamaw and Papaw Tomes (mentioned above). He is our baby and I don't want him to grow up!

New Years resolutions!

So, I was not going to make any resolutions this year...I usually skirt this issue, but God has really pressed on me to "improve" in certain areas. It is not any easy process for me, for I hate change, but I love God more than anything, and he knows more than I, so I am going with him. I am working on deep inner struggles that aren't even easy just to say out loud. But God is molding me and I trust him so much, I know that only good will come from this.

I have always made plans for my life, and God changes them for me in such a loving manner that it almost seems that my life being this good is from my ideas. Yet all my joy, happiness, love, and existence is credited to him!

Pr 16:9 A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

I want my whole life be directed by God, and I get closer to this every year. He is really helping me. What a good God...I have been through quite a valley, and he is lifting me out of it again. I really owe him so much, that I can't repay, but he doesn't want repayment. He just loves me. That is it...He loves me and wants the best for me...I love him so much...Happy New Year everyone, God bless us all is my fervant prayer!

Christmas 2008~The year of the homemade gift!

Christmas with our Family

We had a great Christmas. The food was great and we all made our gifts this year for Christmas. The homemade gifts were very touching.

I can't believe all the gifts I received...I must have been good this year~ I use my apron everyday, my scarf for when I go out, and everyone that comes over LOVES my photo montage!

It was a good experience that will remain with me, I remember it more than any Dirty Santa we ever had.

John made a Grill rack that was really good for the Mikester, Mom made a very nice jewelry that went along with a monogrammed purse for Aunt Letha, Dad used a very old plow piece that was dear to him, along with a calendar, and gave it to Curt (very sentimental), Aunt Letha gave Dad a twist of tobacco that he and his Pa made in the 50's together and framed it, Court received some very nicely framed coasters from Uncle Mike, and John received a Mp3 player full of GOSPEL songs (his favorite thing to listen to in the whole world while driving) from Curt. Also, Curt put songs of the kids and us singing on there too! Mom received a slide show of over 500 pictures of all of us through the years from me....So it was all very touching and a great experience.

For Courtney's birthday, I made her a quilt of her life...She really likes it~

A visit to Santa

John, the kids, Court, Cooper and I went to see Santa. We had a great time. Cooper loves Santa! My kids are a different story. We tried to get Caleb on his knee and he went into hysterics! Abigail was afraid too, but she mustered up her courage and did it. What a girl~ Isaac was just fine, and Noah didn't want to do it (he is a teenager you know!) but Santa insisted. Santa even put John, Court, and me on his lap....Santa gets nicer every year. Merry Christmas to all!

God moved us to the community of Hardinsburg, Kentucky in 1999. He laid on our hearts to join Hardinsburg Missionary Baptist Church. My husband, John E. Geary II, preached there along with other God-called preachers. We took a trip of faith and God has helped us through everything. Now, God has moved us to help start a church in Fordsville,Ky. We were there over three years and the church was doing really good and was starting to grow. John is now helping at Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church. You really can't ask too much of my God.

He is the dearest friend I ever had. He saved my soul when I was an eleven-year-old girl. I was getting ready for bed and this terrible fear came to me deep in my soul and I tried to ignore it but couldn't. I went to mom and told her that my heart was hurting. She hugged me and we sat down on the edge of her and Dad's water bed. Mom and I prayed with many tears and Heaven just flooded my soul. That terrible fear was gone and I was saved. I thank my saviour for coming to my house that night, he didn't have to, but his love came to me that night and I praise his holy name for going all the way for me.

He saved my husband when he was a seven-year-old boy at the altar of Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Satan was using on him that he would have to give up his bike to be saved. John gave that old bike up and came to the altar and was saved. Satan will try to use anything on you to keep you from going with God, but he is, as my husband says, "a defeated foe", and a liar and the author of it. So just get that serpent out of your way and go with God. God has never lead me wrong, and Satan will always lead you wrong.

My oldest son, Noah Walker Geary, was saved June the 9th on a Sunday night at Hardinsburg Missionary Baptist Church. The preaching was from Mark 4:36: And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. Well, my son, a little ship, ran up to the altar and I shouted to the Lord for saving his soul. Oh, what a wonderful night that was. God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit, and the church came together to see someone born into the Kingdom of Heaven. I rejoice still thinking about what God has done for me and my family.

My second son, Isaac Brice Geary, was saved on a Sunday morning right after service on November 7th, 2004. The Lord had been dealing with him for weeks. He would be crying and in tears at the end of every service but just wouldn't surrender. On November 7th, he left his Bible in the church, he came back in, still crying, and he was asked if he wanted us to pray with him. Isaac said, "no, he wanted the church to pray with him." So we all came back in and prayed and Isaac wasn't satisfied the first time he prayed but he got through to God the second time and he was saved. The whole church was able to rejoice with Isaac. He was just swelling in his soul and tears streaming down while everyone was testifying. John shouted and I could just cry and laugh...just like when I had him....as soon as I had Isaac I just got happy and laughed and laughed.

Abigail Hope Geary and Caleb Seth Geary will be saved one day too. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness. The Lord has given me a promise and I hold on to it in the good and bad times. Thank you Lord for your unspeakable gift. The gift of salvation is better felt than told.
